John Eagles

John became a Partner of Govett Quilliam in 1970 and is now Senior Partner.   

Expertise

John has over 40 years’ experience in company law, commercial and property law, trusts and asset protection and elder law. Ownership structures and restructuring of businesses and properties are of further special interest.

John has considerable experience in Local Government work, having acted for local authorities in respect of a wide range of regulatory and governance issues.

He is a Fellow of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand and a member of the Institute of Directors.  He is also a member of the Property Law Section of the New Zealand Law Society. 

Outside of Govett Quilliam

John has had considerable involvement with many organisations and was awarded a QSM in 2008 for services to the community.  John is Chairperson of the Govett-Brewster Foundation, Chairperson of the Pukeiti Trust Fund, Life Member of Pukeiti, Chairperson of the Taranaki Anglican Trust Board, former Chairman of New Plymouth Boys’ High School Board of Trustees, Frankley School Board of Trustees, the Taranaki District Law Society, New Plymouth Opera House Trust Board, New Plymouth North Rotary and is also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.  He has spent time on local and national organisations for the Law Society and School Trustees Association and is a trustee for many private trusts and charitable trusts and is involved with not-for-profit organisations.

He is an Independent Director for the Taranaki Rugby Football Union and a Director of several private companies.

Personal Interests

John has represented New Zealand at the World Age Group Triathlon Championships in 2010 as well as in 2007, 2008 and 2009 as well as swimming in the New Zealand team at the World Masters Swimming Championships in 2004 and 2006.

He is also interested in travel, art, sport, rotary and family involvement with his active wife Karen, four children and three grandchildren.
