David Tyree
David has been working in the area of family law since his 2005 admission to the bar, and has spent that time working with people and families throughout Taranaki. He regularly appears in both the Hawera and New Plymouth Courts.
Expertise
David has experience working across the full range of family law matters, from parenting and guardianship disputes to relationship property, domestic violence, Hague convention matters and challenging wills.
He has recently been appointed to the list of lawyers available to represent children in family court proceedings, and he also accepts appointments to act for vulnerable people under the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act. While David enjoys litigation and court work he is a strong believer that negotiated outcomes generally work best for parents and for children and strives to assist his clients to find common ground from which agreements can be reached.
Outside of Govett Quilliam
David has spent time doing volunteer work for both Citizen’s Advice and the Community Law Centre. He has presented community seminars on family law and is always happy to help organisations or workplaces in this regard.
Personal Interests
David is married with a young child. He is an avid cricket fan, playing for Old Boys. He supports New Zealand in cricket and England in rugby, despite the frequent disappointments in both regards. He enjoys spending time with his family and can often be found buried in a book or gaming.
