Flags to fly again over engineering company

ITL is a substantial employer in the oil, gas marine and industrial sectors providing highly skilled engineering design and build solutions. The company’s employees have come to New Plymouth from all over the world. When the GQ Immigration team saw that flags reflecting employee’s nationalities had been stolen from outside the workplace, replacement flags were gifted by the GQ Immigration team as a thank you to ITL for its great community involvement. Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1992 ("TTWMA") Reforms

Te Ture Whenua Maori Act is currently under review. In February 2015, Maori Development Minister, Hon Te Ururoa Flavell, appointed a Ministerial Advisory Group to progress the introduction of new Maori land legislation.

Public Consultation Hui have been held all over New Zealand over the last two months. A Consultation Hui was held in New Plymouth at the Quality Hotel on Wednesday 17 June 2015 and a draft Bill and consultation document were circulated for discussion and feedback.

The proposed changes aim to:

  • Support and promote the retention and use of Maori land by its owners;
  • Empower Maori land owners to pursue their aspirations for the sustainable development of their land;
  • Enable Maori land owners to make decisions without needing Maori Land Court approval and encourage owner participation;
  • Respect the intrinsic cultural significance of Maori land; and
  • Provide an effective alternative to litigation to resolve disputes.

For the review to be effective, it is critical that Maori land owners are involved. You can contact the Te Puni Kokiri office in New Plymouth for a printed submission form and post the submission to:

Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill, c/o Te Puni Kokiri, P.O Box 3943, Wellington

Alternatively, you can email your submission to

Submissions close at 10:00am on Friday 7 August 2015.

If anyone is interested in discussing the draft Bill and/or possible submissions or if you have any questions about the submissions process, please contact Troy Wano on (06) 768-3710 or Miaana Walden on (06) 768-3760.

Fieldays pays off for the Govett Quilliam Rural team

We are very proud of GQ Rural, one of our specialist teams. They have thoroughly deserved the recognition they have received at Fieldays due to their ongoing high quality legal advice and commitment to forming strong relationships with our farming community.

Thank you to our clients who popped by our booth in the Mystery Creek Pavilion last week to say "hello", as well as the new faces we met, it was a pleasure!

Govett Quilliam VS Staples Rodway

We had a fantastic event on Friday 19 September which saw a team from GQ go head to head with a team from Staples Rodway all in the name of fitness and fundraising for CanTeen. The event coincided with CanTeen's national street appeal

City Fitness New Plymouth provided the equiptment as well as qualified trainers to assist our teams throughout the event, the music was blasting and the media buzz from the local newspaper was great!

The concept was simple, yet effective. The team to cover the most distance using the RPM bike, treadmill and rowing machine over one hour wins. It was relay style, with 5 minute legs per person (each person could do up to three legs max).

It was close competition with Staples Rodway taking out first place, covering 65km while our Govett Quilliam team travelled 59.6km.

A fantastic event for a fantastic cause!
